Shai graduated from Nanyang Technological University with a Master of Education specialized in Special Education. He is also an alumni of James Cook University, Central Queensland University and the Adams State College (now known as Adams State University) with qualifications in Education, Biomedical Science as well as Liberal Arts respectively. He is a trained teacher in the field of special educational needs (SEN) as well teaching english to speakers of other languages (TESOL) and received his qualifications from the National Institute of Education (NIE) and the London Teacher’s Training College (LTTC) respectively.

Apart from his academic qualifications, Shai was exposed to several remediation approaches during his professional work. This includes the Picture Exchange Communication System, Dyscalculia and mathematics intervention, Dysgraphia and Handwriting intervention, ADHD and related Emotional and behavioural difficulties as well as the synthetic phonics using the Jolly Approach. He also has a Diploma in Autism Studies from the Autism Resource Centre and has been working primarily with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder between the ages of 5 to 14 years old in a special education setting, mainstream primary as well as in 1:1 private setting including home-based therapy over the past 10 years. This provided him with a deep understanding of children on the spectrum and other developmental disabilities, as well as the variety of treatments and preventions that can be applied in home as well as educational settings. His clients were primarily children with ASD or learning difficulties from mainstream primary, secondary schools or special education schools offering mainstream curriculum. Apart from clinical treatment approaches, Shai is also trained in creative writing for young children where he developed a few experimental writing pieces during his study at the University of Edinburgh.

Shai’ professional experiences include being a TESOL teacher, a special education teacher at Rainbow Centre (Balestier School, now known as Yishun Park School), an Allied Educator (Learning and Behaviour Support) with the Ministry of Education, a lecturer at Ngee Ann Polytechnic as well as curriculum consultant for private learning centres.

He has also presented at conferences organised by the Young Women Christian Assocation (YWCA) the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) conferences on topics related to Autism and classroom intervention strategies. He was also invited to a colloquium organized by Institute of Education, University College London together with professors from the National Institute of Education to present to present on a similar topic. Shai has travelled to Indonesia, Vietnam and Hong Kong to share his professional knowledge to teachers who directly work or supported children with special needs in their classroom.
